Aren't you done with people asking "That's knitting, right?" It's almost so frustrating when all you want to do is work on your crochet project and someone comes in saying "What's that sweater-thing you're knitting?"
If you know Hindi then you must also be familiar with "Sweater bun rahi hai? Tu??" Ugh. I know, I am done!
Not many people understand the difference between crochet and knitting even though these craft forms are growing into profitable business industries today.
Well now you can educate them with this blog so that they are never confused again.
Let's start with some basics that can clarify the similarities and differences between the both for you!
Tools - are Different
Crochet (and Tunisian crochet) uses a single hook, which means you need to hold the yarn in one hand and a crochet hook on the other. Now don't be confused here; you can crochet however you like. I have seen a lady crocheting with yarn and hook in the same hand. Can you imagine what's that like? Drop me DM on Instagram, I'll send you her link.
Knitting uses two (or more) flat knitting needles and/ or circular needles depending on your project. You can hold the yarn in either of your hands according to what's comfortable to you the most.

So, the tools are the major difference between the both.
Yarn - may be Same
You must have seen brands on Amazon writing "Knitting Yarn" over some of their products, such as this one. But we all know how cute this yarn looks when used for crochet Amigurumi toys as well.

We can use lace weight yarn for intricate knitting designs or we can use bulky yarn to make over-sized cardigans; it doesn't make much difference.
Techniques - are Totally Different
I haven't seen many different crochet techniques except the 2 I know and they're both pretty easy. But as I said they are completely different from the countless knitting techniques that are out there (okay maybe not countless). I know of 5 knitting techniques so far and I've found that only one of them is slightly similar to crocheting.
Stitches - are Usually Different but can be made Similar
I love adapting stitches from both the craft forms. When I made the Harry Styles Cardigan for one of my customers, I searched for all the knit stitches turned into crochet stitches and they turned out pretty good. The stacks of those squares put together looked delicious!
Look of the Projects - Depends on a Lot of Things
Even when you use the same thickness of yarn and tools; there is a significant difference between the look of both the projects. Crochet Projects are usually denser than knitted projects as it involves turning the yarn into loops.
This is also why usually crochet uses more yarn than knitting. It's not a myth at all!

Bonus Content: Which of the both should you choose first?
In my opinion, there is not much difference in the difficulty level of both craft forms but I'd still recommend crocheting first. They both require:
tools and yarn;
good knowledge of stitches;
pattern reading skills;
patience, and
dedication (this won't be difficult at all).
The only challenge in knitting is that it may take a longer time for you to get used to the stitches than crocheting.
That's it from me today. Now, tell me; did I bust any of the myths you had about crochet or knitting? Have I helped you educate your friends about them? Answer these questions in the comments below or drop your questions for me! I'm here to help you always.
Until next time!
Great to know that crochet does require more yarn and knitting is far slower! I thought I was the only one stuck in that debate😅
All info compiled nicely 😊. This definitely helps a beginner.
